Ford F-350 Voltage Regulator Replacement

Ford Voltage Regulator

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

Leece-Neville Alternator
The regulator is mounted on the back of the alternator.
  1. Disconnect the diode trio lead from the regulator terminal.
  2. Remove the 2 nuts retaining the regulator and the jumper leads.
  3. Carefully pull the regulator from its holder.
The brushes will snap together when the regulator is removed. They can now be checked for length. Brush length minimum is 0.188 in. (4.76mm).
To install:
  1. Push the brushes back into their holders and insert a 1 / 32 inch pin through the hole provided in the housing. This will hold the brushes in place.
  2. Carefully push the regulator into place and just start the retaining nuts. Remove the brush holding pin and then tighten the retaining nuts.
  3. Connect the diode trio leads.
Rear Terminal Alternators
This unit is located on the fender liner, adjacent to the alternator.
  1. Disconnect the battery ground.
  2. Remove the regulator mounting screws.
  3. Disconnect the wiring harness from the regulator.
  4. Installation is the reverse of removal.

1994 Ford F-350 7.3 Voltage Regulator / Alternator Removal Procedure

Ford Vehicle Regulator

Where is the voltage regulator Located on 1994 Ford f350 7.3.
First Know What Your Vehicle Has:
There are 4 different types of alternators found on the years and model ranges covered in this information:
  1. Rear Terminal, External Regulator, External Fan Alternator
  2. Side Terminal, Internal Regulator, External Fan Alternator
  3. Leece-Neville 165 Ampere Alternator
  4. Integral Rear Mount Regulator, Internal Fan Alternator.
Rear Terminal, External Regulator, External Fan Alternator
This unit utilizes a separate, external electronic regulator. The regulator is non-adjustable. The rear terminal alternator was standard equipment on 1987 trucks, and can be found on some 1992 motor home chassis models equipped with the 7.3L diesel or 7.5L gasoline engine.
Side Terminal, Internal Regulator, External Fan Alternator
This unit was optional on 1987, standard on all 1988-92 models and standard on 1993-96 models equipped with the 4.9L and 7.5L engines. The regulator in integrated within the alternator body and is not adjustable.
Integral Rear Mount Regulator, Internal Fan Alternator
This alternator is standard equipment on all 1993-96 models equipped with 5.0L, 5.8L gasoline engines and 7.3L diesel engines (except the 1996 F-Super Duty models).
Leece-Neville 165 Ampere Alternator
This unit is optional equipment on some 1989-94 trucks and ambulance packages. A separate, electronic, fully adjustable regulator is employed in this system.
Mitsubishi 215 Ampere Alternator
This unit is found on 1996 F-Super Duty models equipped with the 7.3L diesel engine. The regulator is integral and the fan is external.
 ============

Voltage regulator is either external or internal.

Internal inside the alternator, you will have to disassemble alternator.
If voltage regulator is external then,it is bolted on the back of hte alternator.
For more information the parts store had the regulator: for $9.79 (as opposed to $177 for the alternator).
One more thing , when unplugging the regulator plug on the back of  alternator to check the configuration before buying the regulator, that there's a fair bit of corrosion in the contacts. So plug/unplug it a couple of times, and check. I've put 300km on the truck and the voltage only spiked twice. (and that's with the contacts not properly cleaned, just disturbed a bit by plugging/unplugging).
It is "behind the passenger side battery". The starter solenoid on the fender. This is what the external ones look like, and normally it is near the starter relay on the P/S inner fender:
See the image below for ford 85 inner fender:
The lower left corner of that yellow circle (box?) goes right over it.

Opening an alternator isn't that hard and doesn't require any special tools. Only difficulty can be the brushes when reassembling.
